The Latest Word:
Ok, the truth is, we're not sure what is true and what is just good dirt, but this is the best info we have on this elusively private band. Please e-mail questions or comments. Or, if you want, e-mail here with the word "list" in the subject if you'd like to be on the GRIND update mailing list for all breaking news, new songs, lyrics, etc.'

1/08 - We're awaiting the release of "Blue Fur". Reportedly, a guy who tends to the landscaping at The Treehouse where the record is going through its final mix, said he had seen the guys leaving the studio recently and overheard one of them saying "There, that only took 3 years". So, we're looking for it to be out any day...and we can't wait.

3/07 - Rumor has it that Paul & Julian have had a hand in the great UK release by The Pipettes.  GRIND background vocalist, Beverly Hill, has refused to record an album of her own, but we've found out that her younger sister is reportedly one of the 3 members of The Pipettes, and that Paul & Julian, under psuedonyms of course, may have written and produced their deput record "We Are The Pipettes".  When emailed Julian for comment, all he would mysteriously offer was "I love that record".

4/06 - Check out GRIND's MySpace page, and their wonderful assortment of 'friends'.

9/05 - The AMG All Music Guide selects the Best of GRIND(tm) CD as a prestigious "AMG Album Pick", and gives it 4 out of 5 stars.

6/05 - A story hits the press wire that Dan Protz (tour drummer Mike Protz's younger brother) has successfully climbed to the top of Mount Everest!  The white Heartfield RR electric guitar that Julian has been seen with at the studio from time to time, was originally Dan's.  Apparently it was not convenient for climbing.  Congratulations Dan!  You're one crazy soul.

4/05 - The guys are confirmed to been recording at Branch River Mobile Recording Unit.  We're assuming it's more Blue Fur tracks, as a friend told us only that it's new stuff and wasn't sure what record it would eventually show up on.  Nearby pizza delivery people were kept busy.  We caught up with Paul as he landed at JFK and asked him how Blue Fur was coming, to which he replied, "...according to the website, it now must be 91% done."

3/05 - Paul & Julian are spotted at their Cathedral Parkway studio, reportedly putting the finishing touches on Blammo - which will be the 2nd Paul disc.  A sound engineer did tell us that Blammo is done, and the next GRIND(tm) record is 90%.  We've been told the next record will be called Blue Fur.

7/04 - GRIND(tm) releases There Is Love In The World!!!  It immediately gets picked up for airplay by Yahoo's LAUNCHCast Radio.

10/03
- GRIND
(tm) (Paul, Julian & Mike) reportedly play 2 un-announced shows - both at clubs a few miles outside of San Paulo, Brazil where tour drummer Mike Protz is temporarily living.  Word is that the news had leaked out (they have been a radio staple in SP for years) and both shows were packed.  We've tried to get a set-list, but have been unsuccessful to this point.  When we reached Julian, he did confirm that he & Paul were down there recording, but would not confirm that the shows had taken place.  All we could get out of him was the cryptic, "...It's always nice to see Michael, and things usually start to get noisy - but it may have just been the southern most tectonic American Plate shifting a bit..."  We have no idea what that means...

1/03 - GRIND(tm) is featured on the newly released rock compilation Kid Antrim Music out of New York.  It includes their song 'Favorite Cigarette'.

12/02 - Julian and Paul reportedly spotted at Home Of The Hits finishing the mix of "The Jibes & Jeebs", one of the final songs recorded for There Is Love In The World.

8/02 - The reviews for "The Other's Buzz" are glowing, making comparisons to Freddie Mercury, Fleetwood Mac, Chuck Berry, Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan.  No one here's complaining...

3/02 - After some unanticipated delay, Paul's CD The Other's Buzz is now available on the Genuine Particle label.  You'll hear a candy jar full of treats you've come to expect from anything to do with these guys.  A detailed review hits the March 6th issue of The Onion.

11/01 - Dr. Rudy Rotter, whose generosity and artwork graced the cover of Juggernaut, passed away on November 4th at the age of 88.  Rudy was one of America's most prolific artists, and a wonderful friend to GRIND.  He will be sadly missed.

5/01 - Any day now the Paul CD, titled The Other's Buzz will be out.  It is being released on the New York label Genuine Particle.  Word has it that it's another great roomful of treasures we've come to be spoiled by when entering the magical GRIND estate.  We'll let you know as soon as it's officially released, which should be any day now.

4/01 - Reports are that There Is Love In The World is about 75% finished and will possibly be out by the end of summer.  We have confirmed that Julian & Paul have booked studio time at both Jack Nasty and Rip Chord in Los Angeles for sometime in June.  The rest of the record has been recorded in Wisconsin and New York, as far as we know.  Our sources tell us that the guys have been recording a ton of songs, with some being slated for a follow-up CD.  It's been almost 2 years since a lion & a virgin in a diamond rocket, and they'd like to make up for lost time.  We're told they want to release 2 new studio CD's in the next 12 months, and the Paul CD would make 3!

1/01 - All future copies of Juggernautwill feature new artwork.  Both the cover art and inside art feature drawings by renowned artist Rudy Rotter, from 1965.  Reportedly, the guys were never happy with the original cover art, and to meet a production deadline, had used it as a 'placeholder' only.  So, those of you owning one of the early copies, have a bit of a collector's item on your hands.  Regardless, Julian & Paul are extremely excited about the new artwork and want to say a special "Thank you" to Rudy for permission of use. Please check out Rudy's art and career here.  The guys have publicly denounced the early version as collectable, with Julian saying "Anyone would treasure a piece of Rudy's art over that other one, regardless of it no longer being available".  Hard for us to argue with that...

11/00 - GRIND's song 'The Paine Twins' is featured on the new compilation from Outside Records called Let's Go Outside!.  It's a great collection of stuff.  Brian Hall runs a great label and the guys are proud to be included.

6/00- In a summer mostly spent recording, there have been several 'GRIND' sightings.  Recently, Julian was seen in Pittsburgh talking with Jules Shear backstage at the Andy Warhol Museum, where Shear was performing.  A few nights later both Julian & Paul were spotted in the audience at the Bottom Line in Greenwich Village taking in a show by Jules Shear and Jimmy Webb (who were participating in the "In Their Own Words" series).  While we don't know if there was any backstage activity at this show, we do know that Julian & Paul are long-time fans of both Jules and Jimmy.  You only need to take a listen to "The Last Time Again", from Fit For Kings, to hear Jules' influence on them.  There's also an unreleased GRIND(tm)  song named "Willee" that country singer Cole Shelly is recording for his new record that, according to those who've heard it,  has a major Jimmy Webb feel to it.  While we were able to confirm that Julian & Paul were at the show, they staunchly denied that their songs can hold a candle to either Jules' or Jimmy's.  Boy, artist humility can really take the fun out of a story when you're trying to write a gossip column about them...

2/00 - Paul and Julian were reportedly spending a lot of time lately at B.R.M.U. cutting tracks for the long awaited There Is Love In The World, the next GRIND(tm) record.  Rumour has it they're also working on a track called "The Jackie Doll" and also finished a song called "For The Love Of...(w.b.)" for "There Is Love In The World".  We've tried to find out who or what "w.b." is, but so far they're not telling.  We've also uncovered a story that a nearly-finished song they were working on called "A Part Of Apart" was stolen from the studio.  They have confirmed for us that it's true, but they haven't said whether they'll re-record it or not.  We hope so...

10/99 - Paul and Julian continue to work on tracks for the upcoming "There Is Love In The World" CD.  Word has it that drummer Mike Protz might be guesting on some of the tracks on T.I.L.I.T.W. but it hasn't been confirmed.  It would be his first appearance on a GRIND(tm) CD since '93.  We'll keep you posted.

8/99 - There's a brand new 7" out called "The Trillionaires", under the Ex-Action Figures name.  It rocks, but you probably figured that.  It is a split single on the Saddle-Creek label out of Nebraska.  It can be purchased at www.saddle-creek.com for $3.50.  Just click here, and go to the bottom of that page.  It's listed under "The Faint/Ex-Action Figures."  Tell them you heard about it at the GRIND(tm) website.

5/99 - Paul, under the Ex-Action Figures name, will be getting a backing band together for a few NYC shows this spring (tour details).  Reportedly, he'll be serving up E.A.F. & GRIND sugary treats like "Shaken', 'Metronome', 'Hit Play', 'Time Goes', 'Trick Rock', as well as new ones.  Those who've heard the new stuff say they're better than ever, as expected.  Regular tour drummer, Michael Protz, reportedly has a scheduling conflict (doing some currency work in Brazil regarding the economic crisis...), and Julian Shore continues studio work on their new CD (There Is Love In The World), but has been known to show up on stage for a gig or two by surprise.  So, don't be surprised...

5/99 - GRIND's "Best Of" CD was recently added to the rotation at www.imagine.radio (recently purchased by MTV(R)).   They've been getting a lot of airplay, seemingly often sandwiched between Cornelius and Jason Falkner...which is fine with them.

4/99 - Paul's been spotted around Manhattan recently with the likes of Andy Partridge and Ric Ocasek, (although, not together).  Rumour has it that Paul and Julian became chummy with Sir Andy a few years back while they were recording "Queen" at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, the closing track on their '94 CD, Magnetic Gold Vibrations.  Some say Andy and Colin appear somewhere on the track, but we have never been able to confirm that with Shore or Charles, and they aren't the name dropping kind.  The 'Ric' connection we're not sure of, but insiders say that GRIND once recorded a version of Ric's "Connect Up To Me".  When asked once, Shore would not confirm whether they had or not, but did say how much both he and Paul loved the song!

3/99 - One of GRIND's favorite recording studios, Brooklyn's THE OTHER'S BUZZ (formerly WILD SUN), burned to the ground, resulting from a faulty appliance in another part of the building. GRIND recorded many tracks there through the years. Most recently, many of the tracks on a lion and a virgin in a diamond rocket (recorded under the "Ex-Action Figures" name) were recorded there. Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze, but all equipment was lost.

12/98 - Julian Shore played a rare live solo show, just he and a piano, this past October at the Hollywood Bowl.  Spotted talking to Julian after the show were Peter Tork, and Tommy Stinson (ex-Replacements).

10/98 - The 2nd Ex-Action Figures cd has just been released,  titled a lion and a virgin in a diamond rocket.  you won't be disappointed.  the New York rock press is drooling over it....as usual!

9/98 - GRIND(tm) is reported to be collaborating once again with Paul Westerberg (Replacements) on a new song, tentatively titled "Rush Hour".  They have not worked together since the 3 of them wrote the song 'Pushover' together, which appears on their 1st record, Fit For Kings.

6/98 - Rumor has it, Shore & Charles have resisted signing with a major label for 2 main reasons: potential loss of total artistic control, and the concern that a major will not let them release the volume of material they presently churn out, fearing overexposure.  Shore was once quoted as saying, "I always thought overexposure was a good thing.  Hell, my favorite football player was Lance Rentzel.  In fact, we're trying to get Joey Heatherton for our next album cover."

- The truth is, the rock media can't get enough of GRIND(tm) either. Look at these album and live show REVIEWS.
